In the close vicinity of the fairytale castle Hluboká nad Vltavou you can visit the zoo Ohrada. You can also become an adoptive parent of one of the animals.
The zoo tries to educate and enlighten its visitors in addition to their recreation, offers an extension of education in a non-traditional way to schools of all levels and is involved in the system of nature conservation.
The Ohrada Zoological Garden was first opened to the public on May 1, 1939 as part of the hunting museum in the Ohrada castle by the decision of the then owner of the Hluboká estate, Dr. Adolf Schwarzenberg. Visitors could see mainly our traditional game species, supplemented by several specimens of parrots, nandu, llama and hussar cat. Since then, the zoo has gone through periods of development and stagnation. In the late 1960s, it was even considered for closure. Fortunately this did not happen, the zoo was saved and since 1972 it has been developing as an independent organisation. Further modernisation of the existing exhibitions and the construction of new enclosures and aviaries is guided by the desire to replicate as closely as possible the habitats of the wild and thus provide the best possible living conditions for the animals kept there.
Today, 256 species of animals are kept here in more than 2,000 specimens. In keeping with tradition, the Garden continues to focus on breeding our species, with an extension to animals from Europe and temperate Asia. There is also an exhibition presenting the fauna and flora of Australia, America and Africa. In recent years, the zoo has paid particular attention to endangered species of Czech and European fauna.
